Five Eagles reach double-figures, overcome double-digit deficit to defeat Midway University, 94-83
Midway, KY: The Alice Lloyd Eagles ventured to central Kentucky on Saturday afternoon to battle the home-standing Midway University Eagles. In a contest where the hosts led by 11 points in the second half, the Pippa Passes posse exploded from there and rallied for an impressive 94-83 victory.
In the first half, Midway scored first and eventually jumped out to a 28-16 lead at 11:31. However, over the next five minutes, a quintet of visiting Eagles would score from all over the court. When junior forward Naz Welch completed an old-fashioned three-point play at 6:41, it capped off a 16-4 blitz, to knot the score at 32-32. A late hoop by MU enabled them to go into intermission nursing a 48-46 advantage.
In the second half, Welch and freshman forward Evin Eversole powered in a pair of lay-ins to give ALC a short 50-48 lead. However, the central Kentucky club proceeded to unload a 17-4 burst that lifted them back to a double-digit cushion (65-54) with 14:10 remaining to play. Unbeknown to the Pippa Passes fanbase, the tide was getting ready to turn in a major way in favor of their favorite team.
On the next possession, the visitors saw junior guard Landon Napier drain an important trifecta to slice the deficit to eight (65-57). This would settle down his club down immensley and they promptly went on a massive run. By the time junior guard Desmier Hatchett scored on a fast break layup at the 8:42 mark, his squad suddenly led 76-73. Over a 5:38 minute period, ALC had scored on 10 consecutive plays. This offensive onslight was paced by Hatchett, senior guard Koji Anderson, Welch, Napier, and Eversole.
MU scored to get within 76-75 on a drive at 7:16. Happily for the Pippa Passes posse, Hatchett buried back-to-back bombs, and the lCaney ead was seven (82-75). The blue and white pulled away from there to clinch the nice victory.
For Alice Lloyd (5-11), five men reached double-figures. Hatchett led all scorers with 23 points, bagging 9-16 field goals and 4-8 trifectas. He was followed by Welch , who sank 8-13 attempts for 18 points. He was closely followed by Eversole with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Napier played well, sinking 6-9 shots to finish with 14 points. He aslo recorded his first career double-doulble as he hauled down 10 rebounds. In addition, Anderson scored 12 points and recorded 5 assists.
On the afternoon, ALC shot 49.3% (35-71) from the floor and 52.2% (12-23) from deep. Interestingly, they won by eleven despite sinking only 50% (12-24) from the foul line. They also won in rebounds (38) and steals (9), while adding 15 assists.
Midway (3-8) was led by Tim Fuller with 17 points. His squad shot 54.7% (35-64) from the field, 45.8% (11-24) from long-range, and 40% (2-5) from the foul line. They added 34 rebounds, 20 assists and 5 steals.
