Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles fall late in RSC contest to Indiana University Southeast, 78-70
Pippa Passes, KY: On Tuesday, January 23rd, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles returned home to face the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers in RSC action. The hosts led by 10 points in the first half before faltering in the latter quarters and falling, 78-70.
In the opening stanza, ALC received 7 points from freshman forward Jamie Cowan and shot 64.3% from the floor. This hot start would propel them to a 22-12 advantage after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the momentum changed. Fueled by the scoring of forward Linzie Werhert, IUS roared back into contention. A 25-14 advantage sent the Indiana squad into the dressing room with a 37-36 lead.
In the third stanza, the hosts would see junior guard Katie Jo Moore and senior forward Madison Thompson split a dozen points. However, the Grenadiers stayed sharp, taking the period 26-22. They would enter the final ten minutes holding a 63-58 edge.
Down to their last opportunity, the Pippa Passes squad would knot the score at 63-63. Unfortunately, the club then went cold, producing a quarter-low 12 points. Southeast would then get 6 important points from Karly Sweeney, and pull away late to preserve the win.
For Alice Lloyd (9-10; 4-6 RSC), Cowan, would lead the Lady Eagles with 17 points. She also led her team with 7 rebounds. Moore also hit double digits, finishing with 11 points, and handing off 6 assists.
In addition, senior guard Hannah Kash chipped in with 9 points, 3 assists and 2 blocks, senior forward Madison Thompson added 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks, and senior forward Madison Ward, contributed 5 points, and 2 steals.
The eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 50,9% (27-53) from the field and 35% (7-20) from long range. They also sank 56.3% (9-16) from the foul line while adding 37 rebounds, 16 assists, 3 blocks and 5 steals.
Sweeney led the winning team (7-10; 4-6 RSC) with 23 points. Her squad finished shooting 42.1% (28-66) from the field, 47.4% (9-19) from behind the arc, and 75% (21-28) from the charity stripe. They also added 29 rebounds, 17 assists, 4 blocks and 9 steals
The Lady Eagles return home on Saturday, January 27th, when they face the Midway University Eagles in the top-half of a critical RSC doubleheader. Tipoff is set for 1:00 PM.
