Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles open River States play with big road victory over Shawnee State University, 71-61

Portsmouth, OH: On Tuesday, November 28th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles traveled to the Buckeye State to face the formidable Shawnee State Lady Bears in RSC play. The Lady Eagles came out ready for action, as they controlled the contest for forty minutes to earn the big 71-61 victory.

In the opening period, Shawnee would go to Cianna Gloster early, and she gave her squad a quick 6-4 advantage. However, the home fans would not realize this would be their club's last lead of the night.

Thanks to 9 total points from senior guard Hannah Kash, plus 4 apiece from junior guard Katie Jo Moore and sophomore forward McKenzie Maynard, the visitors would close on a 13-4 burst and take a 17-10 lead after ten minutes of action.

In the second quarter, both squads would hit some nice shots. However, ALC freshman guard Abby Maggard came in to score 10 points without a miss. Her marksmanship propelled the Caney Creek club to 34-24 advantage at intermission.

In the third period, SSU would get within 6 points on two occasions, but freshman forward Jamie Cowan would sink two shots in the paint, and Kash would drain two big trifectas to keep them from getting any closer. ALC would still hold a 49-40 advantage entering the final period of play.

 In the last stanza, the guests would maintain their lead as Kash and Maggard combined to pump in 17 points. The hosts would be forced to foul and the Pippa Passes crew would sink enough free throws to remain in control until the buzzer assured the win.

For Alice Lloyd (5-2), they were led on the night by Kash, who came through with 30 points on 8-14 field goals, including 6-10 from long-range. She added 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Maggard added 3 bombs of her own to finish with 15 points.

Cowan added 7 points and 6 boards, while Moore added 7 points, 5 steals and 6 assists. Maynard led the club with 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.

The winning eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 36.7% (22-60) from the field, 36% (9-25) from deep, and 58.1% (18-31) from the charity line, while adding 40 rebounds, 14 assists, 4 blocks, and 13 steals.

Gloster paced SSU (6-2) with 19 points and 17 big boards. Her squad finished shooting 35.4% (23-65) from the field, but lost by shooting 0% (0-17) from long range. They connected on 60% (15-25) from the foul line They also added 38 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks, and 8 steals.

The Lady Eagles are off until Saturday, December 2nd, when they host the solid West Virginia Tech Golden Bears in RSC action at 1:00 pm. They will be followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
