Huge fourth quarter comeback propels Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles over Lindsey Wilson University, 85-79

Pippa Passes, KY: On Tuesday, November 17th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hosted the formidable Lindsey Wilson Lady Blue Raiders on "Coach J" Court at the Perry Campus Center. The hosts overcame a 10-point deficit in the final quarter, and roared back to earn the huge victory, 85-79.

In the opening period, both squads had trouble finding the basket as defense was solid both ways. However, thanks to 5 points from senior guard Katie Jo Moore, the Lady Eagles would hold a slight 13-12 lead after ten minutes of action.

In the second quarter, both squads would drain half of their shots from the floor. Unfortunately, the Blue Raiders sank two goals more, and would enter the locker room at intermission nursing a 33-31 advantage.

In the third period, LWU turned to forward Lucy Patterson on offense and she delivered 8 points. On defense, they would tighten up and limit the Caney Creek crew to just 29% field-goal shooting. This would enable the Blue Raiders to pull ahead 55-48 heading into the last quarter.

In the final period, the guests would open with a long bomb at 9:37, and take their biggest lead of the game, 58-48. The Lady Eagles appeared to be headed for a disappointing loss unless they could find some sort of spark. Enter forward Jamie Cowan.

On the next defensive series, the freshman picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast for the hoop. A foul on the attempt gave her a three-point play (58-51). Then after the Pippa Passes posse got a stop on the other end, Cowan would hit a tough drive in the paint. Suddenly, with 8:42 remaining, the score stood at 58-53, and the momentum had completely changed.

Over the next five minutes, Alice Lloyd would see senior guard Hannah Kash, sophomore forward McKenzie Maynard and freshman guard Abby Maggard pick up the tempo to produce their clubs next 20 points. They would use this 20-12 sprint to gain the lead, 73-70, with 2:46 remaining. The blue and white would then sink their final six free throws for a total of 37 period points, and slam the door shut on a most satisfying victory.

For Alice Lloyd (4-2), the balance was impressive as 5 players reached double figures. They were led on the night by Kash, who recorded 14 of her game-high 19 points in the final stanza. She also added 6 boards and 5 assists.

Maggard swished 6-11 from the floor (including 3 trifectas) to earn 17 points, while Maynard and Moore (6-12 FG's) were right behind with 16 and 15 points respectively. Maynard also snagged 9 rebounds to lead the victors.

In addition, Cowan who jump-started the run, chipped in with 12 points (4-4 FG's) and 5 boards of her own while senior forward Madison Thompson swatted 3 shots.

The winning eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 46.5% (30-65) from the field and 27.8% (5-18) from long range. They connected on an exceptional 90.9% (20-22) from the foul line while adding 45 rebounds, 11 assists, 7 blocks and 2 steals.

Patterson paced LWU (5-2) with 18 points and 13 boards. Her squad finished shooting 44.4% (28-62) from the field, 31.6% (6-19) from behind the arc, and 68% (17-25) from the charity stripe. They also added 45 rebounds, 12 assists, 4 blocks and 4 steals.

The Lady Eagles are off until November 21st, when they travel to the Volunteer state to face NCAA DII King University at 12:00 p.m.
