Big Second Half Lifts Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles to Road Conference Win Over West Virginia Tech

Beckley, WV:  The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles overcame a four-point halftime deficit and placed three players in double-figures to take down the West Virginia Tech University Golden Bears, 71-63. The matchup took place Saturday afternoon in the Mountaineer state.

In the opening period, points were difficult to come by for the Kentucky ladies as they only had two players dent the board. However, thanks to 7 points from sophomore guard Katie Jo Moore, the score was tied at 11 apiece after ten minutes of play.

In the second quarter, Moore kept up her hot hand and was joined by senior backcourt mate Hannah Kash in producing 8points apiece. Unfortunately, spurred by 13 points from guard Kate Silva, Tech would take the period 22-18. Due to this, WVT would lead 33-29 at intermission.

In the third period, the Caney Creek club would tighten up on the defensive end and hold WV to 3-13 shooting. On offense, six Lady Eagles would produce points as the Pippa Passes posse took the segment, 18-13. This enabled the royal blue and white to regain the advantage, 47-46 heading into the last quarter.

In the final stanza, the two combatants would battle tooth-and-nail, knowing the importance of this game. However, with just 2:49 remaining, and the clock reading 58 all, ALC put together their clinching run.

First, freshman guard Shelby Stewart would swish a clutchbomb (61-58) at 2:30. Then, after Tech sank 1-2 charity tosses (61-59), senior center Bailee Brainard would score on back-to-back power moves. Suddenly, ALC led 65-59 with .59 ticks on the clock.

Coach John Mills cagers would then seal the deal by sinking a perfect 6-6 free throws, which handed them the satisfying victory.

For Alice Lloyd (9-1; 4-0 RSC), Moore came up huge, leading the way with 21 points (9-17 FG's). She added 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kash finished right behind with 19 points (6-13 FG's) She dished off 8 assists and snared 5 rebounds.

Brainard added 16 more points (8-14 FG's), as the big three combined to sink 23-44 field goals. She added 7 boards. In addition, junior forward Madison Thompson grabbed 12caroms to lead all players.

The victors won shooting 43.5% (27-62) from the field and 40% (6-15) from long range. They connected on 84.6% (11-13) from the foul line, and added 38 rebounds, 16 assists, and 9 steals.

WV Tech (9-4; 3-2 RSC) were paced by Silva with 28 points. Her squad finished shooting just 33.9% (19-46) from the field and 29.6% (8-27) from deep. They connected on 77.3% (17-22) from the foul line. They also added 34 rebounds, 15 assists, and 6 steals.

The Lady Eagles return to action next Tuesday when they host the defending conference champions, and 10-1 Rio Grande Red Storm, in a massive matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm, and will be the opening game in a ALC-Rio doubleheader with the Eagles.
