Alice Lloyd Eagles use balanced attack to take down Boyce Bulldogs, 94-71
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd Eagles ended the month of November by playing host to the Boyce College Bulldogs. The hosts would lead from start to finish, placing four players in double digits, and earn the big 94-71 victory.
In the opening stanza, the Pippa Passes posse came out quickly as senior forward Ben Soumahoro and sophomore guard Jack Brown scored 7 consecutive points out of the gate. When sophomore guard Koji Anderson drained a free throw at 15:07, the hosts led 15-2.
However, sparked by 10 points from guard Brody Madiera, Boyce would make a run to lower the deficit to just 5 (34-29) at 4:47. Fortunately, ALC would answer with a mid-range bucket from Soumahoro and trifecta from senior guard Jared Strickland to pull ahead 39-29.
When the buzzer later rang to signal intermission, the Caney Creek crew would enter the dressing room leading 44-37. Soumahoro and Strickland had combined for 29 big points.
In the second half, the Bulldogs opened with a quick 6-2 spurt to get within 3 (46-43) at 17:31. With the game now anybody's for the taking, the Eagles drew a line in the sand and turned on the jets.
Over the next six minutes, ALC clamped down on defense and unleashed an offensive blitz. Sparked by the long-range marksmanship of junior guard Jacob Curry and freshman guard Landon Napier, the Eagles rolled off a staggering run.
When Napier scored on a fast break layup with 11:17 showing on the score clock, it capped off a 22-4 run, and gave the mountain men a 68-47 cushion.
From there, the hometown boys would cruise to the finish line, pulling out the convincing 23-point victory, to send the hometown fans home happy.
For the victorious Eagles (5-2), four players would reach double-digits. They were led on the night by Soumahoro with his game-high 22 points on 10-16 field goals. He achieved a double-double by ripping down a game-high 10 rebounds and also led everyone with 2 steals and 4 assists.
He was followed closely by his buddy Strickland, who drained 6-11 shots for 21 points. He also sank 4-7 bombs and a perfect 5-5 charity tosses.
Curry, came off the bench to sink 4-6 bombs for 13 points, while Napier connected on 4-7 shots (2-4 3PT FG) for 10 points. In addition, Anderson added 9 points and 4 assists while Brown contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Senior forward Blaine Keathley and freshman forward Jackson Tackett both snagged 7 boards, while junior forward Devaunte Robinson tied for the lead in assists with 4 of his own.
The victors shot 50.7% (37-72) from the field, 37% (10-26) from beyond the arc, and 50% (10-20) from the charity stripe. They snared 46 big rebounds, handed off 20 assists, had 5 steals and blocked 4 shots.
Boyce (2-5) was led by Maderia with 22 points. His squad shot 42.2% (27-64) from the field, 29.2% (7-24) beyond the arc, and 58.8% (10-17) from the charity stripe. They snared 37 rebounds, handed off 14 assists, and stole 4 balls.
The Eagles return to the hardwood on Saturday December 2nd when they return home for a massive River States Conference matchup with the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears. The women/men's doubleheader will take place at 1:00/3:00 pm.
