Alice Lloyd’s Solid Effort Takes Down Indiana University East
Richmond, IN: Junior forward Damon Tobler and senior forward Will Philpot combined for 35 points to lead the Alice Lloyd Eagles to a solid River States Conference victory over the homestanding Indiana University East Red Wolves, 78-73. The matchup took place on Saturday, January 14th, in the Hoosier state.
In the opening half, the squad from Richmond came out well and slowly built a lead. Two East free throws at 9:15 gave them a 26-16 cushion, their largest lead of the day.
Over the next six minutes, the Caney Creek club's depth would shine for the second straight game as they proceeded to score 10 points during a 13-2 run. Sophomore guard Brady Nelson's two charity tosses at 3:45 finally gave Alice Lloyd their first lead of the night (29-28). From there, Philpot closed the half with six consecutive points to give ALC a 35-31 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles would pull ahead 45-36, only to see IU East go on a 12-3 burst to knot things at 48-48 with 11:56 remaining. Once more, the Pippa Passes posse would answer.
Sparked by two bombs courtesy of sophomore guard Jacob Curry, Alice Lloyd would unleash a 16-5 blitz to take their largest lead of the game (64-53) at 6:51.
Unfortunately, IU East refused to go away and would continue to battle. Luckily for the Kentucky squad, over the final 5:29, Tobler would take over, pouring in 11 clutch points to keep the Wolves at bay and help sew up the big victory.
For the Eagles (10-8; 4-4 RSC), now winners of 9 of their last 12 contests, they were led by Tobler with 20 points, sinking 8-11 shots. Philpot finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Nelson dished off three assists, while freshman guard Koji Anderson nabbed two steals.
Alice Lloyd shot 50.9% (28-55) from the floor and 50% (3-6) from behind the arc. They finished 79.2% (19-24) from the foul line while adding 32 rebounds, nine assists, and eight steals.
