Explosive First Half Propels Eagles to Big Conference Victory

Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles displayed their best basketball of the year and utilized an impressive team effort to earn a big 89-60 victory over the Carlow (PA) University Celtics. The River States Conference matchup took place on November 19th.

In the opening half, the home fans saw a focused group of Eagles come ready for action as they stormed out of the gate in the opening five minutes with stifling defense and a 12-0 blitz to vault ahead, 12-0.

After the Celtics drained consecutive trifecta to slice the deficit in half (12-6), the Eagles exploded with another massive run.  When senior forward Will Philpot finished a power move inside at the 9:58 mark, it capped off a 16-0 blitz and put the Caney Creek club ahead, 28-6.

For the remainder of the half, ALC would continue the great effort on both ends and get strong play from the bench. When junior guard Jared Strickland swished a long bomb just before the halftime buzzer sounded, the home squad would lead 51-18 at intermission.

In the second half, the Caney Creek crew would maintain their cushion as senior guard Bryce Slone drained several long-range jumpers, and senior center Colyn Sturgill did likewise in the paint.  Equally important, the entire Eagle bench would get involved throughout the stanza. The lead would reach its zenith at 40 (86-46) with 4:46 remaining before the Celtics sank some late buckets to set the final score as the Pippa Passes posse chalked up the satisfying victory.

For the victors (2-5; 1-1 RSC), five players would reach double digits. Strickland sank 6-8 field goals to finish with 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Philpot would have another impressive outing with 14 points and 16 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double. Slone sank four long bombs to finish with 14 points as well.

In addition, Sturgill and junior forward Noah Caudill each contributed 10 points, with Sturgill nabbing 7 boards and Caudill retrieving 5.

Freshman guard Koji Anderson led everyone with 5 assists and chipped in 8 points and 5 rebounds of his own. He was joined by sophomore guard Brady Nelson with 2 steals. Junior forward Damon Tobler contributed 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Alice Lloyd shot 45.8% (33-72) from the floor and 37.5% (9-24) from behind the arc. They finished 70% (14-20) from the foul line. They also grabbed 55 big rebounds while adding 19 assists and 11 steals.

Carlow (1-7; 0-2 RSC) was led by Isaiah Stein with 20 points. His squad shot 32.4% (22-68) from the floor and 32.3% (10-31) from behind the arc. They finished 66.7% (6-9) from the foul line and had 34 rebounds, 11 assists, and 6 steals.

The Eagles return to action this Tuesday when they travel to Wise, Virginia, to face the undefeated University of Virginia-Wise Cavaliers, an NCAA DII foe. Tipoff is set for 7:00 pm.
