ALC Lady Eagles Basketball fall in Mideast Regional Tournament.
Wilmore, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles basketball squad returned to the hardwood on Wednesday, March 4th, as they ventured to central Kentucky to face the Asbury University Lady Eagles in the Mideast Region Tournament. With the leagues automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament on the line, the hosts took control from long range to earn the 93-60 victory.
In the first period, ALC would grab an early 6-4 lead as junior forward Jamie Cowan accounted for all of the Caney Creekers points. However, Asbury would drain their first bomb at 5:50 to pull ahead 7-6. Unfortunately, this would serve as a preview of things to come.
Paced by guard Trinity Britton, AU would pull out to a 22-14 lead after one quarter of play.
In the second period, the scoring slowed down for the visiting Eagles and the home club took advantage. The Wilmore squad would drill several more threes to take the stanza 23-11. This enabled them to pull out to a solid 45-25 lead by intermission.
In the third period, Alice Lloyd fought to stay close. Sophomore guard Bailey Stewart and Cowan combined to score 14 points and help the Pippa Passes posse rake in 25 total points. However, Asbury answered with five more trifectas and 26 points of their own, and would enter the final ten minutes with a commanding 71-50 cushion.
In the last ten minutes, Asbury was determined to thwart any comeback as they jumped out of the huddle on a 18-5 burst to lead 89-55. The home team would remain in charge until the final buzzer sounded.
For ALC (14-12), Cowan led the way with 26 points (9-18 FG), 9 rebounds, and 2 steals. Stewart also reached double digits as she sank 5-10 attempts for 13 points. They would be the only double-figure scorers for the visitors on this day.
In addition, senior guard Aziah Campbell chipped in with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
On the day, the Lady Eagles shot 38.9% (21-54) from the field, 13.3% (2-15) from long-range, and 67% (16-24) from the charity stripe. They added 30 rebounds, 6 assists, and 8 steals.
Asbury (15-13) was led by Britton with 20 points. Her club shot 42.3% (30-71) from the field, 40.5% (15-37) from long-range, and 78.3% (18-23) from the foul line. They also added 36 rebounds, 17 assists and 18 steals.
