ALC Eagles win defensive battle, take down Saint Mary of the Woods, 69-61

Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles basketball team returned home on Saturday in serch of their fourth consecutive win as they faced the Lady Pomeroys of Saint Mary of the Woods (IN). The game would turn into a defensive struggle, but the hosts came through down the stretch to pull out a 69-61 victory.

In the first period, ALC would get multiple points from junior forward Jamie Cowan and sophomore guard Bailey Stewart to take the stanza, 20-15.

In the second quarter, the Alice Lloyd offense grew cold as they only managed 9 points. SMW would produce 13 to take the segment, but the hosts still held a slim 29-28 advantage  heading into the locker room for the half.

In the third period, Lady Eagle sophomore guard Shelby Stewart helped lead her crew to a 22-20 edge. This would enable the Pippa Passes posse to take a 51-48 lead heading into the final ten minutes.

In the last quarter, the pace slowed slightly, but the hometown fans saw their cagers refuse to fold as they produced several key stops down the stretch. Saint Mary would not go away, but ALC refused to allow them to get closer than two possessions as they held on for the nice 8-point victory.

For ALC (5-7) three players reached double-figures in a balanced attack. Shelby Stewart continued her instant offense off the bench as she pumped in 15 points, baggind 4-8 trifectas. She also nabbed 3 steals. She was followed by Cowan, who delivered 11 points, 9 boards, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Bailey Stewart chipped in with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

 

In addition, junior center Emily Estes produced 9 points and 3 blocks while senior guard Aziah Campbell handed off 6 assists, stole 5 balls and contributed 8 points.

On the day, the Lady Eagles finished 39.3% (24-61) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from long-range, and 71.4% (15-21) from the charity stripe. They added 40 rebounds, 17 assists, 10 steals, and 8 blocks.

The Pomeroys (0-10) were led by Abigail Parker with 21 points. Her club shot 31.3% (21-67) from the field, 12% (3-25) from long-range, and 59.3% (16-27) from the foul line. They added 53 rebounds, 7 assists, 14 steals and 4 blocks.
