ALC Lady Eagles Basketball uses big second half to defeat Wilberforce University, 87-66
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Basketball Lady Eagles returned to the Perry Campus Center and "Coach J Court' on Monday to host NCAA DII foe Wilberforce University (OH). The host squad rolled out a huge 54-point second half to break open a tight game and win going away, 87-66.
In the first period, the visiting Bulldogs would score first and jump out to a quick 10-4 lead. They would manage to hold it the entire way and lead 20-18 after ten minutes of action.
In the second period, both teams went cold, but WU managed to creep out to a 29-24 cushion with 4:25 showing on the clock. However, Lady Eagle junior guard Shelby Stewart came off the bench to drain a pair of trifectas that fueled a 9-2 run. This would lift the hosts to a 33-31 advantage at intermission.
In the third period, the opposing clubs traded hoops most of the way, and the Buckeye team led 49-46 with just 3:18 remaining. From that juncture, evereything changed.
ALC suddenly caught fire as six different ladies produced points to start a 14-2 blitz. Just like that, the Caney Creek crew would hold a 60-51 advantage at quarters end.
In the final ten minutes, the hometown fans saw junior forward Jamie Cowan assert herself and pump in 14 big points. Her outburst helped the Pippa Passes posse blow the contest open with a 27-point quarter, as her club pulled away for the big twenty-one point victory.
For ALC (1-4) three players reached double-figures. They were led once more by the inside-out duo of Cowan and sophomore guard Elivia Moore. Cowan led the all players with a double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds. She also added 3 steals. Moore was right behind as she swished 4 bombs to finish with 22 points. She also recorded her own double-double by grabbing 11 boards. Additionally, she added 4 assists and 2 steals.
Also reaching double digits was Stewart, who swished 3-5 bombs and delivered 14 points. In addition, senior guard Aziah Campbell led the way with 5 assists and 4 steals.
On the day, the Lady Eagles shot 44.3% (27-61) from the field, 36% (9-25) from long-range, and 70.6% (24-34) from the charity stripe. They added 43 rebounds, 18 assists, 13 steals, and 3 blocks.
The Bulldogs (1-4) were led by Makaia Smith with 17 points. Her club shot 31.1% (23-74) from the field, 11.8% (2-17) from long-range, and 60% (18-30) from the foul line. They added 52 rebounds, 14 assists and 19 steals.
