Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles drop contest to Indiana University Southeast
Pippa Passes, KY: On Tuesday, February 8th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles returned to the hardwood at the Perry Center and "Coach J" Court to battle the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers in River States Conference action. The hosts would start well, but see the tide turn in the second period, in dropping a 83-67 decision.
In the opening segment, ALC got off to a quick start. Senior guard Katie Jo Moore scored 5 quick points to help her crew jump ahead 7-0. This forced a timeout by the Hoosier club at 7:58.
After play resumed, IUS received several buckets from guard Lenzie Wernert to fuel a comeback. This lifted her squad to a 17-12 advantage at the end of the period.
In the second quarter, the visitors caught fire, as seven players combined to produce 28 points. This flurry, combined with cold shooting from the hosts, extended the Grenadier lead to double-digits and helped them head into intermission leading 45-28.
In the third period, the Caney Creek crew received 12 total points from Moore, and sophomore forward Jamie Cowan gave their troops a 19-point stanza. However, IUS managed to knock down 21 of their own and extend the lead to 19 (66-57) entering the final quarter.
In the final ten minutes, the Pippa Passes posse fought back and would win the segment overall. Unfortunately, the margin was simply too large to overcome as the Indiana club held on until the final buzzer to clinch their win.
For Alice Lloyd (9-14; 4-8 RSC), two players would hit double-digits. They were led by Moore, with 18 points on 6-14 shooting (3-4 3pt). Cowan connected on 6-11 attempts and 4-4 free throws for 16 points. She also ripped down 11 rebounds to produce another double-double.
In addition, freshman guard Bailey Stewart added 9 points while junior guard Aziah Campbell chipped in with 7 points and 4 assists.
The Caney Club finished shooting 37.3% (22-59) from the field and 35% (7-20) from long range. They connected on 72.7% (16-22) from the foul line while adding 35 rebounds, 14 assists, 2 blocks, and 6 steals.
Wernert led IUS (12-10; 6-6 RSC) with 19 points. Her squad finished shooting 51.7% (30-58) from the field, 27.8% (5-18) from behind the arc, and 69.2% (18-26) from the charity stripe. They also added 32 rebounds, 23 assists, and 13 steals.
