Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles use fourth quarter surge to knock off Indiana University Kokomo, 75-66
Pippa Passes, KY: On Saturday, January 23rd, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles returned home to the Perry Center and "Coach J" Court to battle the Indiana University Kokomo Lady Cougars in River States Conference action. Sparked by the duo of sophomore forward Jamie Cowan and senior guard Katie Jo Moore, the Lady Eagle roared back in the final period to pull out a 75-66 victory.
In the opening segment, the hosts turned to freshman guard Bailey Stewart early who helped keep her squad close. Her 7 early points helped the Eagles only trail 20-18 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Cougars saw Cameryn Rector catch fire and pour in half of her squads 24 period points. This propeled her team to a 44-39 advantage by intermission.
In the third period, ALC tightened the clamps on defense and held the Hoosier crew to just 12 points. At the same time, the Bluegrass ladies received 6 important points from sophomore center Emily Estes to spark the hosts. This enabled Alice Lloyd to race back and knot the score up at 56-56 heading into crunch time.
In the final stanza, ALC really played impressive defense, holding their foes to jut 3 points in nearly six minutes of play and 10 in total. Offensively, they fed the ball to Cowan who took over the game by powering in 10-points on a variety of post moves. Once the hosts pulled out to a solid lead, she was aided by Moore, who hit several clutch jumpers to help keep the Indiana club at arms length. When the buzzer sounded, signaling the conclusion of the festivities, Alice Lloyd held a satisfying nine point cushion.
For Alice Lloyd (8-10; 3-4 RSC), three players would hit double-digits. They were led by Cowans huge double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. She sank 9-11 attempts and even led the squad with 3 steals.
She was joined by Moore, who bagged 7-13 shots for 16 points. She also led the day with 5 assists, and added 5 boards of her own. Stewart also joined the double-digit crew by adding 11 points to the cause.
In addition, sophomore guard Kennedy Harvel and Estes chipped in with 8 and 7 points respectively while combining for 8 rebounds.
The Caney Club finished shooting 39.7% (29-73) from the field and 19.4% (6-31) from long range. They connected on 64.7% (11-17) from the foul line while adding 41 rebounds, 15 assists, 4 blocks, and 10 steals.
Rector led IUK (7-11; 3-4 RSC) with 18 points. Her squad finished shooting 38.9% (21-54) from the field, 38.5% (5-13) from behind the arc, and 70.4% (19-27) from the charity stripe. They also added 44 rebounds, 14 assists, and 7 steals.
The hosts won the game with their defense, as they limited their opponent to just 22 second-half points while producing 36 of their own.
The Lady Eagles return home on Saturday, January 25th, for an important matchup with RSC foe Saint Mary of the Woods. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
