Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles Defeat Saint Mary of the Woods, 75-63
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College trio of Katie Jo Moore, Hannah Kash, and Bailee Brainard combined for 59 points to lift the Lady Eagles to a nice 75-63 River States Conference victory over the Saint Mary of the Woods College Lady Pomeroy's (IN). The matchup occurred Saturday afternoon, January 21st, at the Perry Campus Center on "Coach J" court.
In the opening period, sophomore guard Moore came out of the gates hot as she pumped in 9 points. This propelled the home team to a 23-18 advantage after ten minutes of play.
In the second quarter, ALC would get some big buckets from senior guard Kash to maintain their cushion. Her play, combined with big minutes from the bench, would enable the Caney Creek club to enter the locker room ahead at intermission, 42-28.
The pace would slow slightly in the third period as the Pomeroy's looked to chip away at the deficit. Fortunately for the Kentucky squad, senior center Brainard would sink some key buckets while controlling the glass. This would allow the Pippa Passes ladies to maintain a 57-44 lead heading into the last ten minutes.
In the final quarter, the SMWC would ride the shooting of Brooklynn Jones to get within five points (62-57) with 4:29 remaining. However, on the next Lady Eagle possession (64-57), Kash would slash through the press, going coast-to-coast, for a nice layup. Then following an ALC steal, Kash would find Moore, who coolly drained a long bomb. Suddenly, with 3:55 showing, the lead was back up to ten (67-57), and the Indiana squad would not threaten again.
For the Pippa Passes posse (14-4; 7-3 RSC), their three-headed monster proved too difficult to conquer yet again. Moore would finish the game with a game-high 23 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Kash was right behind with 20 points, adding eight boards, four assists, and two assists. Brainard came through with a huge double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also swatted four shots and nabbed two steals of her own. Fellow senior guard Tori Hampton also registered two steals.
The victors won by shooting 45.6% (31-64) from the field and 38.9% (7-18) from long range. They connected on 85.7% (5-6) from the foul line and added 44 rebounds, 15 assists, and eight steals.
Saint Mary (11-7; 3-7 RSC) was led by Jones with 21 points. Her squad finished shooting 44% (22-50) from the field and 28.6% (6-21) from long range. They connected on 56.5% (13-23) from the foul line. They also added 26 rebounds, 11 assists, and five steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action next Tuesday, January 24th, in a huge conference showdown at Indiana University Southeast. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm.
