ALC Softball takes twin bill over Bluefield University
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles (11-11) were home on Monday, March 3rd, for a doubleheader with th Bluefield University Rams (1-9). The hosts would come through in the clutch and earn a sweep for their efforts.
March 3rd
Game 1
Alice Lloyd-5: Bluefield-4
ALC would rally in the final pair of innings to take the opener in walkoff fashion.
The Rams jumped ahead out of the gate when they knocked a 2-run homer (2-0). In the fourth, they would add to their lead by producing a 2-run single, which gave the Virginia squad a solid 4-0 advantage. However, the Caney Creekers would find an answer.
In the bottom of the inning, the hosts would load the bases with two outs. Mckenzie Orfield (3B) would trot home on a walk to make the score 4-1, but the next batter would pop up to end the rally.
In the sixth, "The Pass" would load the bases once more. Then, Brooke Baker (SS) would smoke a grounder that was misplayed, delivering a score, 4-2. Later, Katie Deeds (1B) would be hit by a pitch, and the deficit had shrunk to one, 4-3.
In the seventh, the Rams went down in order. ALC then promptly loaded the bases with another hit-batter and pair of walks. With two away, Briley Aidala (C) then strolled to the plate. After drawing a full-count, she cooly lined a shot over the third basemans head to deliver a pair of teammates and hand the "W" to the home club.
At the plate, Baker and Aidala both had 2 hits while Aidala also delivered 2 big RBI'S.
On the mound, Justice went six gritty innings, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs. She also struck out 3 and walked just 3. Arin Rife relieved for the final inning and took the win. She retired all three batters she faced, with 2 strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles won the hitting war, 9-5, and won with 0 errors.
GAME 2
Alice Lloyd-2: Bluefield-0
ALC received a dominate pitching performance from Rife to earn the sweep.
The Caney Creek crew attacked right out of the gate and loaded the bases. Then, Mackenzie Newport (CF) swiped home to produce a score, 1-0.
Later, in the bottom of the third, Orfield doubled. This was followed by another double from Rife, and the scoreboard now read, 2-0 in favor of the Bluebrass bombers.
From that point, UC would be kept in check as Rife only gave up 4 hits. In the final inning, with 2 out and a runner on base, Justice took to the mound and swiftly induced a harmless grounder to end the festivities.
Rife led the way as she performed impressive double-duty once again. At the plate, she went 2-3 with a the contest's lone RBI On the mound, she allowed only 4 hits and 0 runs in 6.2 innings of work. She struck out 9, and walked just 1, to earn the win. Justice took the save.
The squads tied in hits, 4-4 and ALC overcame the only error of the day.
