Alice Lloyd softball battles top-seeded Shawnee State University for doubleheader

Portsmouth, OH: On April 16th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team traveled to Buckeye to battle the division-leading Shawnee State University Bears in a doubleheader. Shawnee would show why they earned their ranking as they emerged victorious in both contests. ALC's record now sits at 14-28 (3-23 RSC), while SSU moves to 27-7 (17-7 RSC).

Game 1

Alice Lloyd-2; SSU-10

The hosts opened the scoring right out of the gate, using a pair of doubles to pull ahead, 2-0.

ALC erased the deficit in their half of the third, aided by a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and an error by the Bears. This tied the contest at 2-2. Unfortunately, it would not remain tied for long.

Shawnee used two doubles and two singles to plate five big runs in the bottom of the inning. Suddenly, SSU was ahead, 7-2.

The Buckeye squad would add to their advantage by singling in a run in the fifth (8-2) and singling in two more scores in the sixth. This would set the final score at 10-2.

For the Eagles, Maleigh McDaniel's double and Audrey Mowell's single would prove to be the only hit the Caney Creek crew would make. McDaniel had the lone RBI.

On the mound, McDaniel suffered the loss. In 3 innings of work, she gave up 8 hits and 6 earned runs with 1 walk.

Kinna Justice and Carly Creech both appeared in relief. They combined to give up 7 hits and 3 runs.

The Bluegrass club was outhit 15-2 and committed a pair of errors.

 Game 2

Alice Lloyd-1; SSU-9

The Pippa Passes club would open the scoring in their first-at-bat when Ellie Keene (C) singled, then scored when Branham (P) followed suit (1-0).

The home squad got on the board in the bottom of the inning, aided by an error (1-1). They then ran off a five-spot in the third, rolling off three doubles and a triple to produce five runs. The Ohio club now led 6-1.

SSU would pull away by adding a single score on a grounder in the fifth (7-1), then received two more scores on an error and wild pitch in the sixth to end the day on top, 9-1.

At the plate, ALC managed 5 hits, with Keene going 2-3 and stealing 3 bases. Branham provided the RBI.

On the mound for ALC, Branham, Kirsten Vice, Rylee Cox, and Katie Samuel combined to give up 13 hits and 9 earned runs.

The Ohio club would win the hitting battle 13-5. The Pippa Passes posse did themselves no favors by committing 4 critical errors.
