Alice Lloyd softball travels to Saint Mary of the Woods

Saint Mary of the Woods, IN:  On March 16th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team journeyed to the Hoosier State to face the Saint Mary of the Woods Pomeroy's in a doubleheader. The hosts would manage to contain the ALC bats and take two close contests. Alice Lloyds record now sits at 12-8 (1-3 RSC) while SMW moves to 12-8 (5-3 RSC).

Game 1

ALC struck first when Rachel Rife (LF) walked, stole second and advanced to third. She later scored on a wild pitch (1-0).

Saint Mary tied the contest in the second when a critical error permitted a run to score (1-1).

In the third, the Pomeroy's plated a pair of scores, fueled by a triple (3-1), but the Lady Eagles gained a run back in the fourth when Maleigh McDaniel (P) singled and stole second. Later she raced home on an error (3-2).

In the fifth, the Indiana squad used a double and single to add a pair of big scores (5-2). Then in the sixth, they would add an insurance run with another single (6-2). From there, they would close out the contest to earn the game.

The Pomeroy's won the hitting battle 11-4 as the Lady Eagles were held to just four singles on the day, provided by McDaniel, Aspyn Branham (3B), Chloe Taylor (2B) and Ellie Keene (C).

McDaniel suffered the loss on the mound as she allowed 11 hits and 6 earned runs with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.

The victorious squad would help themselves by stealing 4 bases compared to ALC's 3, and both clubs committed 1 error.

 

Game 2

ALC had a tough time at the plate for the second consecutive game and it proved costly.

The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. At that point, a single, stolen base and error led to a run for the Indiana club (1-0).

In their next at bat, Saint Mary sandwiched a triple between a pair of singles to pull ahead 3-0. Then, in the fifth, they added a final score when, after advancing a runner to third base, a long fly ball delivered her home (4-0).

Unfortunately, for the Caney Creek crew, they would be retired in order over the final two innings to end the day.

For the Eagles, McDaniel, Branham, Taylor and Mackenzie Newport (RF) had the only hits.

 On the mound, Kirsten Vice scattered 13 hits with just 3 earned runs. She struck out 3 and only walked 1.

 The Bluegrass ladies would be outhit 13-4, committed the games lone error and stole 6 bases compared to ALC's 3.
