Eagles Play Two in Prestigious University of the Cumberlands Classic

Williamsburg, KY:  The Alice Lloyd College Eagles traveled to Williamsburg, KY, over the weekend to face two strong foes in the University of the Cumberlands Classic. On Friday, November 11th, they faced the undefeated University of Cumberlands Patriots. They followed that up one day later against a solid Campbellsville University Tiger squad.

 

ALC 56; UC-78

In the opening stanza, the host squad scored three quick buckets to jump out 6-0. They would maintain an advantage with strong defense and lead by nine (17-8) at the midpoint.

The Eagles had trouble finding points as a lid appeared to be covering the basket. However, as the clock neared the five-minute mark with the scoreboard reading 22-10, ALC would finally get their first run of the game. Sparked by senior forward Will Philpot and junior forward Damon Tobler, the Caney Creek crew ground out a 10-4 advantage over the next five minutes to reduce the deficit to six (28-22). A late triple from the Patriots set the score 31-22 at intermission.

In the second half, the Caney Creek crew would fight to keep close, and they still trailed by just eight (43-35) with 12:42 remaining. Unfortunately, by the 4:45 mark, UC had managed to pull ahead 64-50, and they would extend their cushion until the final buzzer sounded.

For Alice Lloyd (1-3), two players would reach double digits. Tobler would lead the way with 18 points and add 8 rebounds and 2 steals. He was followed by Philpot with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. He added 2 steals. Senior center Colyn Sturgill led with 2 blocks.

The club shot 45.8% (22-48) from the floor but, surprisingly, went 0-7 from behind the arc. They finished 70.6% (12-17) from the foul line. They also grabbed 36 rebounds while adding 4 assists, 8 steals, and 3 blocks.

Cumberlands (4-0) was led by the high-scoring duo of Jahi Henson and Steven Fitzgerald, with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Their squad shot 39.4% (26-66) from the floor and 32.1% (9-28) from behind the arc. They finished 73.9%% (17-29) from the foul line and had 33 rebounds, 12 assists, and 13 steals.

In the opening stanza, the Eagles jumped out to 8-2 in the first five minutes of play. Then they would put together a beautiful stretch of stifling defense. Over the next ten minutes, Philpot would control the glass on both ends, and the Pippa Passes boys would shut off the hoop to the Tigers, giving them few good looks. Eventually, when Eagle sophomore forward Blaine Keathley made a beautiful tip-in at 5:44, his team led 26-11. Although Campbellsville would fight back, ALC still led 30-22 at intermission.

In the second half, the Tigers would come out with a 15-5 burst to take their first lead of the night (37-35) at 16:17.  The Caney Creek crew would fight hard to hang on. Free throws from Philpot at 9:42 would keep his squad ahead at 48-46, but UC would use a 15-0 run to finally subdue the Pippa Passes team.

For Alice Lloyd (1-4), four players would reach double digits. Philpot would record a 12-12 double-double before fouling out. Keathley and senior guard Bryce Slone would both hit 11 points while Tobler would contribute 10 points and added 9 rebounds Slone and Tobler both had 4 assists while Sturgill swatted 2 shots.

The club shot 41.1% (23-46) from the floor and 31.6 (6-19) from behind the arc. They finished 81.8% (9-11) from the foul line. They also grabbed 41 rebounds while adding 12 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks.

Campbellsville (3-1) was led by Jarius Key with 15 points. His squad shot 40.9% (27-66) from the floor and 20% (4-20) from behind the arc. They finished 57.7% (15-26) from the foul line and had 34 rebounds, 17 assists, and 8 steals.

The Eagles return to action on Thursday, November 17, when they open River States Conference play by hosting the Point Park Pioneers in a big matchup. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
