Baseball splits with UC Clermont, earns 30th victory of the season

Clermont, OH: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles (30-16) baseball team returned to the diamond on April 25th to face UC Clermont (23-20) in Ohio. The Kentucky kids would take the opener in incredible fashion, before faltering at the end to drop the nightcap. However, the victory pushed them to win #30 on the season, a first in school history.

April 25th

Game 1

Alice Lloyd-9: UC Clermont-7

The Eagles rallied from a 6-1 deficit in their final-at bat to take the stunning opener.

The scoring began in the first when UCC scored to break the ice, 1-0.

The Bluegrass boys tied in the second (1-1), only to watch the home squad plate a pair in both the third and fourth innings to move ahead, 5-1.

Later, Clermont added some insurance in the sixth, and entered the final inning holding a commanding 6-1 cushion. Fortunately, nobody told "The Pass" that the contest was a lost cause.

In the seventh, ALC would use a 3-run blast from Elijah Breeding (RF), a solo shot from Carson Tate (2B), a triple from Kyle Johnson (CF), and a double from Aaron Rothballer (DH) to unleash 8 monster runs and suddenly capture the lead, 9-6.

Although UC would score a run in their half of the inning to make the score 9-7, the rally would die, handing the Pippa Passes posse the improbable comeback.

On the day, Tate, Rothballer, and Drake Cole (C) would each deliver 2 hits, while Breeding (3) and Rothballer (2) provided multiple RBIs.

Cain Flynn started on the mound, allowing 2 hits and 1 run with 1 K. He was relieved by Sunny Smith, who gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and 1 walk with 1 strikeout in 2 innings.

Matthew Hebar went 2 innings, and took the win, allowing a single hit and 1 run in 2 innings. Anakin Floyd closed the final inning and earned the save. He gave up 2 hits and 1 run while whiffing 1.

ALC outhit their opponents 11-9, but dug themselves a hole by making the only 3 errors of the contest.

Game 2

Alice Lloyd-9: UC Clermont-11

The Eagles had the tables turned on them as they blew a late lead and had to settle for a split.

The visiting squad would open the scoring in the first with a nice 4-spot (4-0) only to watch the Buckeye club match them to knot the contest up, 4-4.

After the hosts gained a run in the second to inch ahead 5-4, ALC produced a pair of scores in the third and recaptured the advantage, 6-5.

Then, after UC tied the game once again in the fourth (6-6) the Caney Creekers managed 1 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth to inch ahead 9-6.

Although things were looking positive for the blue and white, the previous contest showed you can not take any lead for granted. In the bottom of the sixth, Clermont promptly plated 5 big runs and rallied to take the lead, 11-9. They would then knock Alice Lloyd out in the final inning to earn their own comeback victory.

At the platethe Eagles blasted 15 hits with Ke'jon Wood (4-4) and Grover Maynard (3-4) coming up big.  Maynard provided 2 RBIs while Drake Turner uncorked a solo homer.
