ALC Baseball defeats homestanding Bluefield University, 7-2

Bluefield, VA: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles (29-16) baseball team returned to the field on April 21st in Virginia to face the host Bluefield University Rams (10-32) in a nine-inning contest. The boys from Caney Creek jumped out to a quick lead and added to it on their way to a 7-2 decision.

The visitors registered in their opening at-bat when Cole Bishop (C) smacked a double to bring in a score (1-0). The Rams would respond in the same inning, aided by an Eagle error, to knot the match up, 1-1.

However, in the third, Bluefield would reciprocate the favor. A single from Caney Creeker Colton Lovelace (3B), plus a crucial error and wild pitch from the hosts, permitted a pair of Eagles to race home. Now, the Kentucky kids led 3-1.

In the fourth, the Rams walked an Eagle on base, and he eventually scored when Kyle Johnson (CF) lined a hot-single up the middle (4-1).

Later, in the seventh, after Lovelace singled and Jayden Huff (LF) doubled, Bishop brought one buddy home with a single of his own. This propelled the Pippa Passes posse to a 5-1 advantage.

Eventually, in the ninth, after a Bishop single and walk placed a pair of runners on the basepaths, they both trotted home when Elijah Breeding (RF) drove a double to the wall. This gave "The Pass" a commanding 7-1 cushion.

Down to their final opportunity, the Virginia crew would manage a run following consecutive doubles (7-2). Fortunately, with one out, they would ground into a game-ending double play to send the Bluegrass bunch home with the nice victory.

At the plate, Lovelace and Bishop wielded the big bats, with Lovelace going 4-4 and Bishop finishing 3-4 with 3RBIs. Johnson and Breeding added a pair of hits to the cause

RJ Broome took the victory with a solid 6 innings of work. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 run while walking 2, and whiffing 3.

Braydon Norton and Niklas Kidd relieved. In two innings, Norton gave up 4 hits with 0 runs while Kidd allowed 2 hits and 1 run in the final inning.

The Eagles took the hitting battle 13-9 and committed fewer errors, 3-1.
