ALC Baseball hosts three-game series with Wright State Lake
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles (8-4) baseball team returned to the diamond on February 27th-28th to face the Wright State Lake Dragons (2-1). The visitors would play well and take the series.
February 27th
Game 1
Alice Lloyd-2: Wright State Lake-5
The Dragons tamed the Eagle bats as they took the opener.
The scoring began in the second when WSL singled to break the ice, 1-0.
In the third, ALC saw Colton Lovelace reach on an error. He then advanced to third on a single from Diego Rodriguez (SS). Later, when Rodriguez broke for second, the throw by the Dragon catcher flew into center field, delivering the tying run (1-1).
However, Wright State jumped back in front in the fourth on a 2-run blast (3-1). They then added to their advantage in the fifth when an error and pair of singles made the score 5-1.
In the Eagles final at-bat, Cole Bishop (C) singled then eventually advanced to third. An error then brought him home to chip into the deficit (5-2). Unfortunately, a groundout would end the contest and hand the victory to the Ohio squad.
At the plate, Rodriguez and Bishop had the lone hits for the hosts
Cain Flynn started on the mound and suffered the loss. He allowed 4 earned runs on 5 hits in 4.1 innings of work. He stuck out 3. Braydon Norton relieved for .2 innings, allowing 1 hit and whiffing 1. Matthew Hebar went the final pair of innings, allowing just 1 hit with 4 strike outs.
ALC hurt themselves with 4 errors.
Game 2
Alice Lloyd-3: Wright State Lake-5
The Eagles scored first, but could not hold on.
The visiting squad would open the scoring in the fourth when they laced a double to deliver the runner (1-0).
In the bottom of that inning, John Lopez (RF) led off with a single. He then strolled home on the strength of a Drake Cole bomb to lift the hosts to a 2-1 lead.
The score remained the same until the sixth inning. In that at-bat, Wright State used a pair of Eagle errors and a double to plate 4 big runs. This propelled the Buckeye club to a 5-1 cushion.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Pippa Passes posse tried to rally. Kyle Compton (3B) did his part by smacking a double, then scoring on an error (5-2). Unfortunately, a pair of pop ups would end the day.
At the plate, Eric Lazzo (1B), Compton, Cole, and Lopez al laced singles, while Cole recorded 2 RBI's. and a homer.
Sunny Smith started on the mound and pitched five solid innings. He allowed just 1 earned runs on 2 hits. He stuck out 7. Seth Fitch, Niklas Kidd, and Anakin Floyd all saw relief action. In 2 innings, they combined for 2 hits, 4 runs, and 1 whiff by Floyd.
The clubs both had 4 hits but the home team hurt themselves with 2 errors.
February 28th
Alice Lloyd-15: Wright State Lake-7
A new day brought a new team as he Eagles wielded the big bats to win going away, and prevent the sweep.
The visiting squad would start well, opening the scoring in their first at-bat by singling in a run(1-0). One inning later, they would repeat themselves and pull ahead, 2-0. The momentum was getting ready to change, however, aided by the Dragons
In the bottom of that inning, ALC took advantage of a pair of errors and trio of walks by the Buckeye club to plate a pair of runs and knot the score, 2-2.
Then in the next Caney Creek at-bat, Rodriguez and Bishop singled, Next, Aaron Rothballer (DH) drew a walk to load the bases. This brought Jayden Huff (LF) to the plate, who promptly unloaded on a fastball, sending it screaming over the left field fence. His grand slam made the score 6-2.
To their credit, the visitors fought back. They would use a two-run shot in the fourth and a double in the fifth to chip into the deficit. Now the score was 6-5. Once again, ALC answered.
In their portion of the fifth, after Huff stroked a hit to reach base, his buddy Challen Massengill (CF) placed a single down the line to bring in the runner (7-5.) They followed that up in the sixth by placing two runners on the basepaths and having Rodriguez deliver a homer to deliver the goods This set the score 10-5, and a sacrafice fly before the inning ended made the score 11-5.
In the top of inning seven, a pair of Wright doubles shrank the disadvantage to 11-7. Happily, the hosts would soon seal the deal.
In the bottom of the eighth, a pair of singles from Jacob Ayers (1B) and Tate followed by a Rodriguez double led to a flurry of 4-scores, and set the final, 15-7.
At the plate, Rodriguez went 4-6 while Tate and Huff both achieved 3 hits. Huff and Rodriguez both drove in 4 runs.
Trenton Williams started on the mound and pitched four solid innings. He allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits and struck out 2 in claiming the victory
He was followed by Ryan Grubbs, who allowed 3 runs on 2 hits. He was relieved, in succession, by Braydon Norton, Quentin Williams, and Anakin Floyd .In 3 total innings, they allowed only 1 hit and whiffed 1.
The Eagles rapped 15 big hits including 3 doubles and 2 blasts with 2 errors.
